What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. Your skeletal structure and muscles constitute a mechanical system. Poor posture, poor lifting or working technique, sports injuries, gardening and a host of other activities can strain joints or cause misalignment of the spine, pelvis or other parts of this mechanical system. Sedentary activities such as sitting or not taking physical exercise, can also cause dysfunction. Misalignment within the spine can affect the nervous system, possibly causing pain remote from the site of the misalignment.
What should I expect?
Your first consultation will last approximately an hour. A detailed case history will be taken noting present symptoms and previous episodes of pain possibly relating to those symptoms. This will include enquiries into medical and family history, as well as previous trauma history. A detailed examination is then made by the Chiropractor to diagnose your condition. This will include examination of posture, active and passive range of joint motion and some exercises relevant to daily activity. From this diagnosis a treatment plan is developed. Appropriate treatment is given using McTimoney Chiropractic and other associated techniques. The use of these techniques is usually painless, and persuades the return of the body's correct alignment without force or undue stress being placed upon it. In addition guidance will be given on improving posture and on movement during daily activity; if appropriate, exercises will be recommended. The proposed treatment is always discussed with the patient prior to commencement. Follow up treatment, if required, is similar, but involves a shorter assessment prior to treatment. The appointment will last approximately 30 minutes.
